Over the past two decades, I've had the privilege of working across a range of industries: and if I've ever learned one thing in my life, then it's that the future never crashes into our lives with any loud announcement. It quietly glides into our routines, fitting itself in day after day until one day, we realize it's everywhere. AI is just one such quiet revolution.
Artificial Intelligence is no longer some abstract concept loitering about in research laboratories. It's here now, steering the ways in which you and I shop, communicate, and decide. From resetting passwords by means of chatbots to algorithmic suggestions on what movie to binge next, AI today is running behind the scenes in our lives.
Think of Amazon for example: it uses AI to make eerily precise recommendations while setting up one of the most complicated logistics networks in the world. Or Netflix, where AI is not only suggesting what you should watch but even deciding what should be produced in the first place.
So yes, AI is the future of business. But let’s be clear — it is also very much the present!
Still, not every aspect of this transition has been smooth. Consider Duolingo's recent announcement promising to go "AI-first." There was a swift and loud reaction. Loyal users were far from thrilled—they were in fact disappointed. Why? Because the very thing that made the app engaging for them: the human-like tone, the quirkiness, and the connection seemed at risk of being lost. It is a poignant reminder that while AI might be able to mimic intelligence, it can never simulate emotion and trust, nor does it have that glint of human spirit everyone still longs for.
This is where leadership counts, and the new era will reward those companies that incorporate AI as a considered extension of human ability rather than a magic wand. It is not man versus machine but understanding when to automate and when to show up with heart. AI might assist us in doing things faster and efficiently, but it is still people that build loyalty, relationships, and culture.
Anytime I lead and invest in companies, we have always positioned technology as an enabler, never a replacement. Whether it is an enablement of remote teams working more flexibly, ways of interacting better with customers, or expanding services across borders, AI is a stepping stone, never the whole journey. It’s a tool and just that.
So, is the future of business in AI? No doubt about it. But only if we remember to carry our humanity along with us.
