When I think of the workplace of the future, say 2030, I don't see offices filled with automatons or jobs replaced by monstrous machines. I see something much more interesting. I see work becoming more fluid and more human than it's ever been.
Everybody is scared that AI is going to steal their jobs away! Fair assumption. Indeed, technology will continue to reshape industries, true. Maybe certain jobs would even disappear altogether, but many many others would appear instead. That's the speed of change. It is constant movement.
The truth is: the future of work is not technology, but humans. The humans driving the technology in particular. Successes in the year 2030 would be those individuals who learn quickly, keep learning, and stay open to change.
The days of one getting a single degree or a single job to last them a lifetime are long gone. The professionals of tomorrow would need to redefine themselves not just once but many times. And that would not be a liability but an asset. The energy of learning new things, of traversing limits between one's jobs, and of adjusting, would prove to be the biggest asset anyone would require. While it’s never late to learn something new, the need for the hour is to make sure you are adept with AI and AI-related topics.
At the same time, in 2023, what machines won't be able to do will matter even more. Creativity. Empathy. Leadership. These are the things that will set humans apart. You’ll find that the best workplaces utilize technology wisely to manage the routine tasks so us humans can focus on solving issues, building relationships, and coming up with the kind of ideas that truly count.
I see this every day in my own businesses. I've had employees come onto the job doing one thing but, over time, becoming completely different ones. One employee came into the operations, worked their way into the digital marketing division, and now leads a product strategy vertical. Their transformation shows me how much the need to learn and the desire to jump into the unknown outweigh a specific set of abilities. This is the exact kind of flexibility the future demands; and the future is speeding your way, like it or not.
So the future of the workplace is not one to dread. It's one to rejoice. The workplace of 2030 will celebrate the curious, the adaptable, and the brave enough to keep learning. It will bail workers out of dangerous circumstances and give them wiggle room for taking the helm without putting themselves in harm's way. It will be a place where human creativity finds its highest value, while machines handle the rest. And finally, it will be a workplace of readers, leaders and innovators. I think that's a future to look forward to.
