Being an entrepreneur in Qatar

Being an entrepreneur in Qatar

12 Aug 2014
“Qatar is home to more young aspiring entrepreneurs than any other country in the Arab world, according to Gallup surveys.”

Qatar encourages entrepreneurship in a big way and the in the new millennium the focus has been on promoting digital entrepreneurs. There are several funding agencies and private investors who have now come forward to fund new companies. Earlier local business could only rely on banks to bring in funds but with an increase in equity investors the entrepreneur community has gotten a shot in the arm. The funding is available from small to medium businesses and investors also play an active role in assisting companies grown into a larger entity.

While investors are careful to understand the risks involved in getting on board with new companies, Qatar has a good business environment that is conducive for launching new businesses. The new equity investments are also driving entrepreneurs to open their minds and explore new areas of business. This is driving the economy to diversify and also catch up with the other Middle East nations that have started early on. Qatar has slowly been attracting venture capital investments, albeit at a slower pace than the other Middle East nations but the steady in-flow shows the confidence that is increasing in the Qatari way of business. Aside from the boom in digital technology companies, education is another area in which Qatari investors are putting in their funds. They are aiming to improve the education system from the kindergarten school till the post –graduate university to a world class level. They are also partnering with foreign universities to get better access to staff and research.

The tax policies are also conducive for entrepreneurs as there are no personal taxes, social insurance or deductions from salaries. Qatari law taxes foreign firms but allows foreign nationals to earn up to 80% of profits. It is also a nation that is among the top 10 countries of the world in GDP per capita. This allows for easy access to funds and has given rise to several seed fund investors. In terms of global investment into Qatar businesses, there is a lot of funding flowing from the West. US and Canada have shown great interest in development of the region. The World Bank has also extended funds to developmental organisations working in the region.

Qatar is today successfully moving away from its reliance on oil and hydrocarbons and establishing itself as an economy that is building a strong entrepreneurial environment. This has attracted several skilled workers who want to part of this wave of diversification.
